‘Tis the season for holiday overload! You are ready to trim the tree and wrap the presents, but are you keeping your pets’ safety in mind? We’ve got all the information you need to have the holiday of your dreams without keeping the family vet on speed dial.
1. Keep the Tree Secure
If possible, find a cozy corner and anchor the tree to a wall or ceiling or anything that keeps the tree from tipping. If the family pet should decide to climb the branches, play chase or hide around the tree, damage will be minimal. Ideally, a child or pet barrier should be placed around the tree area to keep everyone safe.
2. Decorate Responsibly
Just say no to homemade popcorn strings or even cranberries which might entice your pet. Dangling light strings along the lower branches are also a no-no, as are glass or other ornaments that dangle.
3. Keep the Area Tidy
Live trees are not poisonous, but the needles that drop are hazardous to pets if ingested. Make sure to keep those needles off the floor! Also, stagnant tree water is full of bacteria, so keep the water as fresh as possible and use a tree skirt to cover the area.
4. Hide the Hazards
Extension cords should be covered or hidden to prevent chewing.
5. Minimal is Merry
Wrap packages with care. Less is better! Ribbons and string are not only attractive to humans, but pets have a hard time resisting them, too.
Following these simple tips should keep everyone in your household festive and safe.
