My cat has hairballs about once a month. Is this normal? Is she in any pain? – Shawn M.
Hairballs are a very common issue in cats, especially long haired cats. I wouldn’t typically consider these events to be painful. Having an issue with hairballs once a month is probably normal. However, sometimes people can attribute certain types of behavior to hairballs when in fact the problem is actually diseases like feline asthma or inflammatory bowel disease.
If your cat’s episodes produce an actual wad of hair then hairballs are likely the culprit. However, if there is no wad of fur being produced then something more malicious may be to blame. It is always best to talk with your veterinarian on an individual basis about any coughing or vomiting that your cat is experiencing, especially if it starts to occur more than once a month.
