While reading a book the other night the strange sensation I was being watched came over me. I looked down into a pair of eyes looking at me from the floor by the bed. Molly stood patiently, her over-sized rawhide in her mouth, waiting for me to put her on the bed with me.
I obviously complied and she walked to the corner of the bed farthest away from me and laid down, chew between her paws, her tiny mouth making no indentations in the chew toy.
My youngest daughter, as I call my 4-year-old Shih Tzu, looks like a stuffed animal and hates to cuddle. Don’t get me wrong, when she wants to she will crawl on to my chest, shoulder, face- anywhere she thinks could be comfy and fall fast asleep, but it’s got to be on her terms.
Every night when it is bedtime she walks to the end of the bed farthest from me and curls up to go to sleep. God forbid I accidentally touch her while she’s sleeping.

Can you believe those noises come from this face?
She’s an independent little one. Sometimes I’ll be watching TV and realize she’s not in the room and find her alone, curled up in a chair in the den in the dark. Half the time she prefers sleeping under my bed, hidden behind the dust ruffle, instead of on the bed with me.
I wonder if that streak has to do with how she came into the world. The local animal shelter raided a puppy mill and rescued a pregnant dog, the dog had a litter and Miss Molly was born.
Then, most of the litter caught Parvo and died, but my Molly stayed healthy and eventually came home to us. But she’d been through so much on her own, before I was her Mama.
Sometimes it’s like she doesn’t need me at all.
Then, sometimes I’ll be watching a movie and she’ll inch over and put her head on my shoulder and sigh.
That’s when I know it doesn’t matter how she came to me, it just matters that she did.
