It was a beautiful fall day when we got a call from our neighbor telling us that he had a dog at his gate that he thought belonged to a neighbor who had moved away. We had almost expected the call since the boxer mix in question had almost lived at our house when our grand dog was in residence. So, we hurried to rescue him and take him home.
The dog at the gate was not our neighbor’s dog, but the sweetest looking female lab mix with very soulful brown eyes. Our neighbor told us that someone had dropped her off and she hadn’t moved for two days waiting for her people to come back and get her. He asked us if we might like to have a dog. It had been almost 10 years since we had shared our home with dogs. Ten years of easy living with no obligations. Ten years of traveling without worrying about who would feed and take care of a dog.
Lucky in her natural habitat.
However, one look at her and we knew we were goners. “Lucky” came home with us and never once looked back. We grumbled a little about how she would change things for us and said that she would be an outside dog and would be little trouble. Six weeks later she was sleeping in the garage on a deluxe dog bed spending most of her day inside with us. Six months later she was sleeping on the deluxe dog bed in front of our fireplace. Lucky was home to stay.
I knew who was truly lucky when we turned into the gate to our house and saw Lucky sitting at the end of the drive waiting for us. My husband turned to me and said, “She really makes this place feel like home, doesn’t she?”
